Another romanian theme I have always been inspired by is the romanian embroidery motifs and traditional folk costume, or as Matisse featured in so many sketches and paintings, La Blouse Roumaine. The colours, creativity and variety of these creations give me an immense sense of pride and provide an endless inspiration.

Based on an old tradition of painting religious icons on glass by artisans in Romanian villages, this technique dates back as far as the Byzantine Empire.

It involves using raw pigments ground to a paste then mixed in with an egg yolk emulsion which dries very quickly and allows for transparent layers of bright colours to build upon. The painting order is also in reverse, starting with the lightest layers first then building up gradually to the darkest tint.

The frames are made from reclaimed wood by local framers.

Size, aprox 41 × 35 cm
