Seraph

Based on an old tradition of painting religious icons on glass by artisans in Romanian villages, Seraphim were a very common subject in Orthodox countries and date back as far as the Byzantine Empire.

This tehnique involves using raw pigments ground to a paste then mixed in with an egg yolk emulsion which dries very quickly and allows for transparent layers of bright colours to build upon. The painting order is also in reverse, starting with the lightest layers first then building up gradually to the darkest tint. The back is then covered in pure gold leaf that shines through the thinest layers of the tempera.

The frames and stands are made and assembled from reclaimed wood by local framers and me.

The stands are optional so you can take off your framed Seraph and hang it on the wall if you prefer.

Size, aprox:

with stand 28 x 16 cm

without stand 20 x 18 cmSeraphim
