The Romanian word

Dor:

  • Definition: A profound, deep-seated sense of longing, yearning, homesickness, or melancholy for someone, someplace, or a time that is gone.

  • Not an action, a state of being: In English, you "miss" someone. In Romanian, dor is an actual physical and emotional weight you carry inside.

  • Etymology: Derived from the Latin word dolus (meaning "pain"), it blends pain, love, anxiety, nostalgia, and hope all at once.

A series based exactly on this word and what it entails in it’s many meanings.

A life work project I expect inspired by both my romanian heritage but also by english culture and my life as I know it here for the last 20 years. Looking at old paintings I did back in University and high school, when I was young and excited and free and fearless… It will not necessarily reflect these times, but it will draw from them and the artworks created in those beautiful days.
